How to create your Personal Web Pages

Create your Web pages

You may choose from an extensive list of Windows HTML editors.

From the makers of the original Web browser NCSA Mosaic, see A Beginner's Guide to HTML to learn the basics of Web page authoring.

Publish your Web site

Before you can upload, download or change the contents of your Web directory, you must establish an FTP connection to Pine Belt's FTP server. To do this, you need an FTP program for your PC. We recommend the popular (and free) wsftp program, which is on the EZN cd that you received when you signed up for PineBelt Internet Service. Your web address is www.pinebelt.net/~yourlogin.

How to connect to Pine Belt's FTP server using WS_FTP

  1. Open WS_FTP.
  2. Click Connect. The Session Profile window appears.
  3. In the Host Name field, type www.pinebelt.net
  4. In the User ID field, type your regular account name
  5. In the Password field, type your password.
  6. Leave the Remote Host field blank.
  7. Click OK.

Once you have completed these steps, the Session Profile window will open, revealing the contents of your home directory. You should see a sub-directory called public_html.

How to Make Your Web Pages Available on the Worldwide Web

You will want to upload your HTML documents and accompanying files to your public_html directory on Pine Belt's Web server.

  4. Select ASCII when uploading text files, such as HTML documents.Otherwise, select Binary.
  5. Click the right-arrow button.
  6. If necessary, rename the file (select the file and click the Rename button). Use lower-case letters whenever possible. Remember that our web server is case sensitive.

Notes on file naming:

  1. Do use index.html as the file name for your default Web page.
  2. Do not use spaces in file names.
  3. Do use the following file extensions:
  4. .html or .htm for HTML documents
  5. .gif for GIF images
