History |
|
Choctaw County was established on 29 December 1847 from the southern part of Sumter County and the northern part of Washington County. Choctaw County was named for the Choctaw Indians, most of which were removed to Oklahoma. Some Choctaw Peoples still remain in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The original courthouse was built in 1848 in Butler. In 1859, and again in 1871, part of the courthouse burned, destroying many of the records in the Probate Office. The present courthouse was built in 1906-7. |
