History of Butler, Alabama Originally Butler was called Hendrick's Cross Roads, but was changed to Butler in December 1847 when the new county of Choctaw was formed and Butler became the county seat. It is believed that the town was named for Pierce Mason Butler (1798-1847), born in Edgefield District, South Carolina, who was killed at the Battle of Cherubusco in the Mexican War, August 22, 1847. He had a distinguished career as Governor of South Carolina, served as an Indian Agent, and served in the US Army until the time of his death. The first Courthouse was completed in the center of town in 1848. When part of it burned in 1871, it destroyed many of the Probate Office records. The current yellow brick building was begun in 1906 and completed in 1907. Wings have been added to the building over the years, the latest addition was completed in 1965.
Willis Brewer's Alabama, Her History, Resources, War Record and Public Men, published in 1872 has more on the early history of Butler and Choctaw County. |
