Thomas Meggs and 35. Karonhappuc Tubb.

Notes for George E. Rolison:
Relationships are proved to this point. Assumptions are made on George's ancestors only to keep records in order. Believe these siblings and ancestors are related but exact nature is not known at this time.

George came to Selma from Bibb Co. Alabama., he had earlier been in Perry County, where married first Pheraby Rials.
He was a depot agent. He took the girls to Pierce Springs and lived there while they went to the Woman's College. Then he returned to Selma. He died of pneumonia.

At this point in time (10-16-1996) is is apparent that George was born in Richland Co. South Carolina. It appears that  William Rolison or Rawlinson , or Rollinson (take your pick) is George's Grandfather. William came to Autauga County Abt 1822, apparently with Lewis, Asa, Nathaniel, Nancy, Agnes all named in William Rolison's Will. Also another contact says that a son Daniel also came with him? Could this possibly be a Daniel not his son but a nephew?

Family Notes:
According to The Southern McGrews Grew, "Henry Mortimer McGrew was very young when his father died. A grandson,Henry Thomas (Tommy) McGrew asked questions in early 1890s of his paternal grandmother and an aunt wrote down answers; therefore, some things are known today about Henry Mortimer (his wife, his birth date, his death date, and their children) that would not have been known. But one thing that he did not write down (and the grandmother might not have known) was the name of Henry's parents; therefore, the ancestors of Henry are only educated guesses. Henry and his brother
lived with their mother and stepfather, and some said that Henry had Indian blood, but it was the stepfather who had Indian blood and Henry's dad or mother. They were in this family until after the 1830 census and then there was the story that they ran away from home because his stepfather worked them too hard.  The first mention of Henry's name in a book or record was the obtaining of a marriage license in Sumter County, Alabama on March 23, 1836 to marry Elizabeth Mills. It has never been ascertained that this marriage was ever consumated, but if it was, there has been no sign to indicate that children were born. He then married Susan Ann Kemp (born April 23, 1818 in Craven County, North Carolina to John C. Kemp (probably the son of Isaac and Sarah Kemp) and Anna Rowe (probably the
daughter of Benjamin Rowe and Lucinda Holland who was married Dec 22, 1783 in Craven County, North Carolina), who married April 23, 1814 in Craven County, North Carolina and went to the Alabama and Mississippi area around 1831 or 1832) on June 21, 1838 in Alabama. The 1840 Greene County, Mississippi census showed Henry and family, and this was the county where Henry's maternal grandfather, Henry Thomas, was located for the 1816 special census. Henry's family was not
found for the 1850 census, but they were found on a special Choctaw County, Alabama census for 1855. The the 1860 Clarke County, Mississippi census showed them, but no sign of them was found on the 1870 census. It is presumed that they were still in Clarke County, Mississippi because Susan Ann and children were there for the 1880 census. The census records and Civil War records were the only records found for this family in that period of time because the Greene County, Mississippi
courthouse burned in 1871 and the Choctaw County, Alabama courthouse burned in 1876. It is known that they could neither read or write and they did have 11 children.  Susan Ann said that after they married and built a log cabin, they built a bed of split rail logs by placing the flat side up, putting a railing on the sides up, putting a railing on the sides, filling it up with leaves, and covering it with a blanket. They had
only 2 blankets so they "kivered" with one. They had a skillet and lid and that was all that they had when they began housekeeping. Susan Ann was a small woman and she told about a couple of things that happened before her marriage. She said that Red Bill McGrew would get drunk and stand on the banks of the Tombigbee River and sail silver dollars across the waters. She would beg him not to do it but to give them to her, but he would just laugh at her. She always wished that she had all of those that he had thrown into the river. She also told of an Uncle Tom Rowe (she always said it plural to sound like
"Rose") who carried his money in a sack on his back. He disappeared and they never hear from him again.  )Henry enlisted in Capt. Daniel R. McIntosh's Company of the Mississippi Volunteers (seccessionists) for the Civil War and mustered into the service of the State of Mississippi on April 27, 1861 in Quitman, Mississippi, as a private. He mustered in the service of the Confederate States on May 12, 1861 in Corinth, Mississippi as part of the 13th Regiment. He was discharged in Union City, Tennessee on June 12, 1861, because of disabilities. There are conflicting stories about the death of Henry. The date of June 19, 1876, was presumably given to Tommy McGrew by Susan Ann.  )Susan said that during the Civil War when they would see soldiers or Home Guard coming, they would hide the food,
especially the salt and meal and then try to hide themselves. The intruders would ransack the house and take what they wanted, but would leave one horse with which they were to plow their crops. They had hard times! Eli (a deaf child) was eventually the only male left at home, so he and the two youngest daughters who were still at home would have to make the crops and the living. Eli's health got so bad that the doctor advised Susan Ann to move her family from Mississippi. Another son, Dave, was
in Texas so he went back in 1884 and brought them to Wise County, Texas. She sold the farm before leaving, but the man who bought it cheated her out of the payments, so she practically gave it away. They lived several miles northeast of Alford, Wise County, Texas, and the two daughters married and Eli was still sick a lot of the time. The youngest daughter and her husband moved themselves, Susan Ann, and Eli to Arthur, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, about 1890 where the husband and Eli ran a blacksmith shop. Susan Ann died in the Pipe Creek area on Jan 20, 1895 and was buried in the Pipe Creek Cemetery, now called Park Cemetery, 7.5 mi. south of Arthur, Oklahoma."
Died on 19 Aug 1876 in Clarke County, Mississippi

Her home in Winchester, Mississippi burned in 1871.  See letter that she wrote to Hiram Dugold about the death of her sister Mary Hough.  At some time she moved to Marlin, Texas.
She is buried in Winchester Cemetery in Wayne County Mississippi.

Winchester, Mississippi
Oct 23rd, 1871
My Dear Brother,
Your kind favor reached me some time ago; but, owing to many causes, I have been unable to reply earlier.  Since writing to you before, we have been very unfortunate - our house, with everything we possessed, burnt down on the 23rd of last month-it happened about 12 o'clock at night, and in three minutes after we awoke, the house had fallen in- the servants came very near being burnt alive, as they were nearer the kitchen, in which the fire originated.  We are with Ma now, I dont know what we shall do yet; we are so well fixed for moving that I think we ought to go to a new country.
There is still a good deal of sickness in this neighborhood - my two little girls and Robertus are having chills - Ma is as well as usual.  Jennie and cousin Bolivar left for Texas last Sunday - they took Belle Hough with them.  Nothing was done about the property, except to give Ma a deed to ther Meridan land.  Cousin Bolivar said that when this land at Winchester was sold he wanted to get a piece & build Ma and I a house on it, so that we could live together & then I should have the house at Ma's death - Jenny gave me $100. in gold, when she left, besides some clothing.  I dont think this old house will last many months longer.
Ma told me to tell you that Mary left her oldest girl, Sallie, to you and that she was keeping her until you could come for her - She also gave me the letter she received from Alhannon, in reference to Mary's wishes, to send you, you will find it enclosed.  Ma don't know whether she will keep house after this year, or not, & if not, she can't take charge of Sallie.  Cousin B. wants Ma to live with him, but wont take Sallie too.  I believe Ma prefers living with me and if I was able, I would gladly keep Sallie too, but it is impossible; however, she seems anxious to live with you.
Write to us soon & givce our love to Lou, & accept much for yourself.
Your affectionate sister,
Olivia V. Smith,
P.S.  You must excuse this unconnected scrawl. I have had so much trouble I scarcely know what I do or say.
P.S. (On front page) I presume that you do not know that in signing that "Deed" for Cully, you signed away land of Pa's that had no claim on it - Cousin Clem only had a claim on 40 a. of the 120 acres that the "deed" called for.
(This letter was writing to Hiram Dugald Shaw.  We do not know who kept the children except that Hiram Dugald Shaw raised Sam, the youngest child.)

I am looking for the family of Joseph Wright, who I believe was born about 1740 in VA. Joseph is
believed to have died about 1790 in Laurens Co., SC.
The known children of Joseph WRIGHT and Mary ----- were:
(1) Jane Wright, (born 1774, Laurens Co.?; died 18 Dec 1837, Norcross, Gwinnett Co., GA);
married 13 Feb 1794, Laurens Co., SC, Matthew BOLTON.
(2) Mary Wright, (born 1777, Laurens Co.?; died after 1860, Calhoun Co., AL); m. Terrell
ANDREWS, Sr.
(3) David Wright, (born 1782 (1791?), Laurens Co., SC; died 16 Aug (11 Aug?) 1867, > Calhoun
Co., AL); m. Rebecca ANDREWS. David and Rebecca reportedly had six > sons and four
daughters. Their proven children were:
(1)George M. Wright, born 1810 in Laurens Co., SC, married Nancy MCCLURKIN, 1835 in
Talladega Co., AL. George died 1890 in Talledega Co., AL.
     (2) Martha J. Wright, born 1828, Laurens Co., SC, married Eli BURDEN (Borden), 1845 in
Benton Co., AL. Martha died, 1909 in Limestone Co., TX.
Other likely children of David and Rebecca were:
John A. Wright, born 1821, SC, married Hannah JOHNSTON, 1846 in Benton Co., AL.
     John died before 1870 in Etowah Co., AL;
Joseph Wright, born 1823, SC, married, first, Margaret JOHNSTON, second, Elizabeth
     NUNNELEY;
David A. Wright, b. 1825, Laurens Co., SC, married Susanna TEAGUE, 1845, Benton Co.,
     AL, died 1904, Calhoun Co., AL;
     Rev. James C. Wright, born 1830, SC, died 1909, Calhoun Co., AL;
     Elizabeth Wright, married 1837, James C. HAMILTON in Benton Co., AL;
     Nancy Wright, married 1836, A.B. Criswell in Talledega Co., AL;
Mary Jane Wright, m. 1840, George W. PHILLIPS in Talledega Co., AL.
Other known surnames linked to the Wrights of Benton, Talladega and Calhoun Cos., AL,
were BURDEN (Borden, Berden) and WHEELER.
(4) James M. (D?) Wright , (born about 1783, Laurens Co., SC; died 9 May 1873, Choctaw Co.,
AL); married (1) Nancy CLARDY, born 1789, Laurens Co., SC; died after 1860, Choctaw Co.,
AL; dau. of James C. CLARDY, Sr. and Sarah HALL. James married (2) 1871, Choctaw Co., AL,
Susan E. BAIN ;(Susan's daughter, Cora Ellen BAIN, married Jesse Caper Wright, youngest son
of Jesse Austin Wright and his second wife, Susan M. YOUNG [below.])
(5) Joseph Wright, ( born 1788, Laurens Co., SC; died 22 Aug 1853, Tuscaloosa Co., AL); married
19 Dec 1812, Rebecca ANDERS (who died 10 Dec 1874, Tuscaloosa Co., AL.)
(6,7,8) Unidentified daughters
James M. Wright is recorded as living in Fayette County, AL, in 1832, when his land grant in the
Choctaw Indian Cession of 1832 was recorded in the Tuscaloosa Land Record Office. Another
grant in 1836 was recorded to a Henry Wright, possibly the cousin of James. Apparently, at the
same time that James M. Wright was in Fayette Co., AL, a James D. Wright was recorded in
Tuscaloosa County, AL. Whether James M. WRIGHT and James D. WRIGHT are the same
person or two different people cannot at this time be assessed, as siblings of James emmigrated to
that Alabama county. James Wright filed a pension application as a Veteran of the War of 1812.
At the time his second son was born, the only child born in TN, James had been discharged at
Hazel Green, AL. It is believed that his wife, Nancy, during the time of her husband's military
service, was perhaps staying with a John CLARDY whose residence just over the TN line was
recorded at that time. The relationship between Nancy Clardy Wright and John CLARDY is
unclear; he is not her brother, nor is he a recorded son of Michael CLARDY. Yet, apparently,
James and Nancy named their second son after this man. The parents of Nancy CLARDY, James
CLARDY, Sr., and Sarah Hall CLARDY died, respectively, 1841, and after 1850, in Laurens
County, SC. James CLARDY, Sr., named his daughter, Nancy Wright, in his will dated 1830,
proved 1846; other children named of James CLARDY and wife, Sarah, named in the will along
with their mother, were: Jesse E. Clardy, James Clardy, Michael Clardy, heirs of deceased William
Clardy, and other daughter, Suky Tierce. James CLARDY(Senior) was the son of Michael and
Judith CLARDY of VA; Michael CLARDY lived in Amelia Co., Virginia, and died in Halifax Co.,
Virginia.

The children of James M. Wright and Nancy Clardy were:
     (1) Jesse Austin Wright, born 13 Jan 1812, Laurens County, SC

     (2) John Clardy Wright, born 1816, TN; married Emily (Crockett?)

     (3) David W. Wright, born 1818, AL; died Choctaw County, AL; married Rebecca GUINN,
daughter of Henry GUINN & Mary Ann FITZGERALD (sister of Elizabeth, below.)
     (4) William H. Wright, born 1820, AL; married, 1842, Mahala Tyler
     (5) Ellis Michael Wright, born 1825, AL; married Martha Jane FALLEY
     (6) Silas Anderson Wright, born 1827, AL; married Mary Jane Ray, dau. of Elijah RAY and
Nancy Ann MARTIN; died Choctaw County, AL; Mary Jane RAY was the only known
     sibling of Robert Andrew RAY.
     (7) Sarah Caroline Wright, born 1829, AL; married Benjamin BURNS
     (8) Reubin G. Wright, born 1835, AL; married unknown.
     (9) Mary H. Jane Wright, born about 1824?, AL; married William MARCH
The children of Jesse Austin Wright and Elizabeth GUINN (Bible Record) were: (1) James
Clardy Wright, born 1833, AL; married unknown
     (2) Henry S. Wright, born 1835, AL; married Rebecca Jane GUINN, daughter of Wesley
GUINN and his second wife, Jane BLYTHE (and granddaughter of Henry GUINN and Mary
     Ann FITZGERALD.)
     (3) Susan Wright (though listed this way in the Bible record, her descendants have her name
as Maryann Susan Wright; for some reason, almost all my ancestors seem to have been
known by their middle names.) Susan was born in 1837, Choctaw Co., AL; married Robert
Andrew RAY, son of Elijah RAY and Nancy Ann MARTIN. This is my Wright ancestor.
     (4) Martha Ann Wright, born 1839, AL; married ----- STAFFORD.
(5)Thomas Benton Wright, born 1841, AL; married unknown.
     (6) Melissa Emeline Wright, born 1842, AL; married unknown.
     (7) Andrew Jackson Wright, born 1844, AL; married Jennie Louise J. -----
     (8) Jesse Caper Wright, born 1849, AL; married Cora Ellen BAIB.
Jesse A. and Elizabeth G. Wright are believed to have also had two sons not recorded in the
     Bible record, who were:
     (9) Thomas Benjamin "Bennie" Wright, born 1854
     (10) William Asbury "Berry" Wright, born 1856
Jesse A. Wright married a second time in 1860 to Susan M. YOUNG. They had the following
children, also recorded in the family Bible:
     (11) Jefferson Davis Wright, born 1861, AL; married unknown
     (12) Clarissa Ursula Wright, born 1862, AL; married Thomas Jefferson CAMPBELL
     (13) Nancy Lillian Wright, born 1865, AL; married Albert F. CREEL
     (14) Sallie Eleanor Wright, born 1869, AL; married unknown
     (15) Mary Caroline Wright Wright (the double name is correct), born 1871, AL; married
     unknown
     (16) Marcella Pembina Wright, born 1879, AL; married ----- FLYNT.
Also listed in this bible record are two names whose relationship I am unsure of: Molly Caroline
CRUMBLEY, died 1903 (possibly Mary Caroline Wright above?); Maude Rivers SUMRALL, died
1919
In the Choctaw Co., AL, Inventory Book H, pages 1-8 appears the following court document: 20
Feb 1909: Susan M. Wright, widow, petitioner, states that Jessie A. Wright died 27 March 1887,
intestate. She stated they were married in 1860 and that she was currently living in Tunnells,
Mississippi. She listed the only child of Wesley GUINN and his first wife, Lovenia PRICE, and the
eldest grandson of Henry GUINN and Mary Ann FITZGERALD of Madison Co., AL. Mary
Susanna Wright was, I believe, the daughter of either Silas A.Wright and Mary Jane RAYor the
daughter of David W. Wright and Rebecca GUINN. I am still trying to verify her parents.) Floyd
died, 1940 in Mobile, AL.
(4) George Smith Ray, born 1868, Choctaw Co., AL;married Mary Susan GUINN, dau. of Frank
GUINN and Mary Susanna Wright, and sister of Sallie (above.) George S. and Mary S. Guinn Ray
were my maternal great- grandparents. George Ray died 1964, Saraland, Mobile Co., AL. Mary S.
G. Ray died 1952, Saraland, AL.
(5) Laura Estelle Ray, born 1872, Choctaw Co., AL; married James Buchanan Thompson. Laura
died 1958 in Ensley, AL.
(6) Robert Hosea Ray, born 1877, Clarke Co., MS; married Estelle Hanson. Robert died 1898 in
Montrose, AL.
(7) Vaughn Vegaria (Vaqara?) Ray, born 1881, Choctaw Co., AL; married Margaret "Maggie"
BRYANT. Vaughn died 1904 in Clarke Co., MS. They had one child, Viola Ray.
Several of the Wrights & Rays in these lines had the middle name "Smith", the origin of which is
unknown. Also, it should be noted that several descendants are investigating a possible link
between the Wray/Ray, Borden (Burden), Wheeler, and Echkols (Echols) lines of Bedford Co.,
Franklin Co., and Amherst Co., VA. Possibly one of these counties is the birthplace of the
patriarch, Joseph Wright.
I am looking for the ancestor of Joseph, his wife's maiden name, and descendants of all of these
Wright families. I must have a lot more cousins out there.

Personal Notes:from http://www.kaybee.org/~mcguire/cgi-bin/ged2web?steele:607
Alexander McGrew was born after 1790 in South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Thomas (her father was possibly Henry Thomas who was in Washington County, Alabama in 1810, and later in Green County, Mississippi) in the home of his uncle, John McGrew, on July 8, 1816 in Clarke County, Alabama. It is presumed they had two sons before Alexander died in early 1820's (he was not alive when his father made his will on Sept. 8, 1823.) It is then presumed that Elizabeth married Alexander DeCastro, the brother of her brother-in-law, William's wife, on May 6, 1824 in Marengo County, Alabama and the 2 sons of Elizabeth and Alexander McGrew were with her and Alexander DeCastro for the 1830 census.

Children of Alexander McGrew and Elizabeth Thomas are:
22 i. Henry Mortimer McGrew, born June 09, 1817 in Alabama; died August 19, 1876 in Clarke County, Alabama; married (1) Elizabeth Mills March 23, 1836 in Sumter County, Alabama; married (2) Susan Ann Kemp June 21, 1838 in Alabama.

 47.  Anna Roe, born March 13, 1797 in Craven County, North Carolina; died Aft. 1882.  She was the daughter of 94. Benjamin Roe and 95. Lucinda Holland.

Searching for parents & siblings of John KEMP born about 1795 in NC, died
1883 in CLARKE COUNTY MS. John KEMP married Ann ROE 1814 in
Craven County NC. About 1832 this family moved to MS. They are listed on
the 1850 Census in CLARKE COUNTY MS with the following children:
Sarah, David, Hannah, Elizabeth, Lucretia & Thomas. Thank you for any help
  provided.

From WFT Vol.11 Tree# 1152
The KEMP name is found in many English and Scottish records.  In Scotland it is pronounced "Camp".  In Germany it appears as "Kempf".
Written proof has not yet been found to verify that Isaac and Sarah Kemp are the parents of John C. Kemp.  The circumstantial evidence would indicate that they are and for that reason they are included here.
ISAAC KEMP served in the Revolutionary War from New Berne District, Craven County, North Carolina.  In 1790 he was living in Craven County, North Carolina, with his wife Sarah, two sons under 16 years of age and a daughter (age unknown).  John C. Kemp was born in 1795.  The family is also shown on the 1800 census.
On January 10, 1809, Elizabeth Kemp married Abner Gatlin in Craven County, North Carolina.  As there is no other Kemp family listed in Craven County, there is a strong possibility that she is Isaac Kemp's daughter as shown on the 1790 census.
The records for the War of 1812 list JOHN KEMP (#83) from Craven County, North Carolina.  He was seventeen at the time.  On April 23, 1814, at the age of nineteen JOHN C. KEMP  married ANNA ROWE (ROE).  She was eighteen.
ISAAC KEMP died between 1800 and 1820.  In 1820 SARAH (SALLY) KEMP was living in Craven County, NC, with her daugher and granddaughter, possibly Elizabeth Kemp Gatlin and her child.  There is no indication how or when Abner Gatlin died.
In 1830, JOHN C. KEMP and his wife ANNA had two sons between the age of 10 and 15, Susan KEMP (age 12), Rebecca KEMP (age between 5 and 10), JOHN W. KEMP (age 7), a son under 5, and Sarah KEMP (age 1).  They were still living in Craven County, NC.
The family moved to Clarke County, MS, about 1831.  David KEMP was born there in 1832, Hannah in 1835 and Elizabeth two years later.  In 1838 the oldest daughter, Susan Kemp, married Henry McGrew and they lived in Greene County, MS.  There is no indication as to the whreabouts of her two older brothers.  There is a record of John C. Kemp purchasing land from Simion Duke.
Family tradition says Anna Rowe Kemp had a brother named Tome Rowe who disappeared in Mississippi while carrying a large sum of money and was never heard from again.  It was assumed he was robbed and killed.
