BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The American Cancer Society
RELAY FOR LIFE is a team event hosted by communities, cities or counties.
Teams are formed from churches, companies, organizations, and clubs.
Each team consist of 10 or 12 members and each member is asked to raise
at least $100. Each team raises as much money as they can.
Sometimes bake sales, car washes and bucket drops are used to raise the
team's money. On the night of the event each team sets up a camp
site. Usually a theme is used. Last
year my team's theme was a cowboy campsite. Our slogan was "Roping,
Rustling and Wrangling for Research".
Cookouts are popular! Each team is
responsible for having a team member walking at all times. Last year
we had more problems getting team members to take a break than getting
someone to walk! Luminaries
are the highlight of the event. Prior to the RELAY luminaries are
sold in honor or memory of a loved one. The lighting and dedication
ceremony is a very moving experience. Walking down the track with
candles burning in honor or memory of someone who has fought a battle with
cancer, makes all the hard work and effort seem like the best thing you
have ever done in your life.
If someone should ask you to participate
in a RELAY FOR LIFE and you choose to do so, I can guarantee you that you
will not be sorry.
